More About Influenza
Influenza is a respiratory tract infection that is caused by viruses. Typically, influenza causes a sudden onset of high fevers, muscle aches, tiredness, sore throat, headache, runny nose, diarrhea and cough, that can last on average 7 days. Complications may include pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections and severe asthma attacks. Rare complications include myocarditis (inflammation of your heart muscle), encephalitis (infection of your brain) and death.
Children with heart disease, asthma, diabetes, renal problems and immunosupression are at higher risk to develop complications as well as infants and young children.
Getting a yearly influenza vaccination is the MOST effective means available to prevent the disease.
